SALESPEOPLE Are You PROTECTED?
Now that I have your attention I want to talk about something serious that you need to protect, your CAREER!
Successful businesses understand the importance of collecting customer information. In the automotive industry dealers are constantly creating innovative methods to capture the information of all current and future potential customers as they understand the value of re-marketing. Dealers are investing large sums of money to ensure this vital information is not only collected but utilized efficiently to generate more sales.
Ask yourself how many times in the last year has your dealership held a “private sale event?” In some cases you have dealerships conducting these types of events on a bi-weekly basis to create business. Vendors in our industry have also identified the immense opportunities to generate business through a dealerships database and in doing so they have created a number of innovative ways to effectively do so.
So – the dealers get it, the vendors get it, but do YOU get it?
You see the dealerships have Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools in place to capture this information. You as a model employee assist in their effectiveness by logging all of the customers you talk to or do business with into that system which mutually benefits both parties. Now in the event there was a power outage for example the dealership has all of that information backed up. They understand the value of it and take the appropriate measures to protect it.
My question to the salespeople in our industry is this, Are YOU Protected?
Hypothetically speaking what if a meteor was to fly out of the sky tonight and blow up your dealership and any back up measures they had in place to retrieve all of their (and your) customer information, where would that leave you?
Ok, maybe that example is a bit too far fetched for you, fine.
Let’s take a look at another all too real scenario that plays out in dealerships all the time, turnover. Some dealerships transfer ownership and when the “new guard” arrives perhaps you don’t see eye to eye and you decide to move on or are asked to leave – are YOU protected?
My point is simple, YOU must ensure you protect yourself!

You need to create your own personal database of customers/raving fans if you truly want to experience incredible levels of success in your career! This does not mean you discontinue effectively logging your dealership traffic. This means you take ownership of creating, developing and protecting the single most valuable asset in your career, your customer database!
Three very important things are accomplished by doing so:
1) You will have all of your customers in your hands in the event something happens at your dealership
2) You will be able to effectively market to them in a personal way that will create the ultimate level of sincerity between you and your clients.
3) You will remain inspired on a daily basis because of what you are building, your personal empire!
Think about it, if you are saving for retirement you do not leave the money in a park next to a tree, you PROTECT it! You are acutely aware of where your investment is while constantly mitigating risk on it. It should be no different with your customers and their contact information, when managed properly they are a personal retirement plan for you that will pay you for years to come.
I see many uninspired salespeople on the showroom floors of dealerships in our industry. The main reason is because they treat their opportunity in the dealership as a “J.O.B” and not a Career. Sales professionals who treat their opportunity in the dealership like a career understand this and are motivated to build their book of business and protect it! They remain inspired through judging their days by the seeds they sow, not by what they reap. Each day where they can add names, email addresses and phone numbers to their database of customers is considered a win.
The individuals who treat their opportunity in the dealerships like a “J.O.B” do not do what career minded people do and therefore they never experience the same results or fulfillment. When you are building and creating your career and future you will not only become extremely motivated and inspired to take action on a daily basis, you will also be creating the ultimate retirement plan while making an income in line with the top 5% of the country.
Those that keep showing up to their “J.O.B” on the other hand will always remain where they are,
